Ratlins (rattling, rattlin, rattliny, viba) are widely used for catching
perch and
pike , but in winter it is for pike perch that vibas show excellent results. Rattlins are a universal lure that works both in summer and in winter due to freeze-up, but when choosing a particular lure, as well as options for its use and animation, it is worth considering the fishing conditions, size, type and activity of the intended fish.

Catching walleye on ratlin in summer
Bladeless wobblers are very effective for pike perch, as they allow you to fish the bottom layers, where the predator keeps.
Tackle
The pike perch sits at great depths and prefers medium / large size and weight rattliners. Therefore, the tackle must be of the appropriate power. Spinning fast action, test 5-21, 8-30 grams. Spinning reel 2500-3000 according to Shimano classification. A braid with a breaking load based on the size of the lures and the intended trophy.
Ideal conditions for using vibes
Rattlins are very catchy lures, so they can be used to fish large areas. Also these lures are used for fishing at medium / deep depths. They work with both active fish and passive ones. Depends on supply and wiring.
How to use zander ratlings correctly: feeding and posting
Rattlin can be mastered even by the most inexperienced spinning player. They say goodbye to wiring flaws. For zander, several options for animation of vibes are used:
- Uniform wiring . Uniformity along the bottom or in a given horizon. Ratlings have a high-quality game of their own, so often you don’t need to invent anything – you just need to vibrate at the minimum speed of the drive. This option is good for a passive predator.
- Jig step wiring . A step is a very good option for wiring, in which you can process the bottom along the edges, dumps and other anomalies at the bottom of the reservoir. Passive and active fish.
- Light twitch . Standard uniform wiring with twitch, like minnow wobblers. More suitable for active “evil” pike perch.
- Stretching . Quite sharp pulls with a rod along the bottom with a pause and a choice of line at the end. Depending on the strength of the pulls, you can collect both active and passive fish.
- Wave-like wiring . The bait sinks to the bottom, then a smooth ascent is made, on which the bait shakes its sides. Then the bait is driven to the bottom and a pause is made with light rocking of the ratlin with the rod. For passive walleye it gives a good result.
The choice of ratlin for a fanged predator: general principles, catchy models of vibes for zander
When choosing catchy rattlinas for catching zander, one should take into account the species characteristics and habits of the predator, its lifestyle and hunting. Pike perch, as you know, prefers to stay at the bottom, and hunt there. Moreover, if possible, he chooses deep places relative to the rest of the reservoir – pits, channel edges, reservoirs, deep whirlpools. The food base for pike perch consists of chased fish – bleak, roach, rudd, minnow. Therefore, the main emphasis should be placed on rattlins of a similar shape. Zander often pushes its prey to the bottom with its stiff jaw. Therefore, it is important that the tees are of high quality and sharp. At the same time, pike perch is a rather cautious predator, and often, especially in winter, it prefers silent or little noisy ratlin, in contrast to perch or pike. But this is not a dogma, noisy rattlin models work quite well for active fish.According to the colors for the fanged, bright and catchy colors, natural and fluorescent, are preferable. For catching zander in the summer, the following ratlin models are suitable:
- Rapala Rattlin . 5 and 7 cm models. Classic rattlin from Rapal. Very noisy, but for an active predator, it can also be used in winter. Can also be used for trolling fishing. Wiring – jig step, wavy, uniform. The price tag is 500-600 rubles.
- River2sea Glassie Vibe 50, 65 . 10.6, 19.5 grams respectively. A good inexpensive wobbler for pike perch, perch and even peaceful fish. Effective when fishing from ice. Well controlled during wiring. Not very stubborn and does not make unnecessary movements during the animation. Predictability of behavior is very much to the liking of the fanged. The price is 300-400 rubles.
- YO-ZURI Sashimi Rattl’n Vibe . 7.5 cm, 20 grams. Very high quality rattlin from Japan. It flies well, holds the stream and responds clearly to all rod movements. At the bottom it takes the position of a feeding fish. On the wires – jig on large pits, uniformity in layers of 1-3 meters. The price is 400-450 rubles.
- Strike Pro Flap Jack 40S, 65S, 75S from 6 to 21 grams. Wide range of colors. Flap Jack is a working ratlin in any size, it all depends on the fishing conditions. Works on zander at depths from 1 to 6 meters. Can be used on the current – does not fall on its side. Price from 400 rubles.
- Jackall Mask Vib 70s Gene , 70 mm, 9.7 grams. Dzhakalovsky rattlin for trophy pike perch. Uniform and jig step. Price from 700 rubles.
- Sebile Flatt Shad, almost the entire lineup, especially sinking models . Noisy models are more suitable for open water, for winter – silent ones (Sinking). During bottom wiring, it very actively provokes the pike perch to grasp. The working horizon, depending on the model, is from 1 meter to 4 meters or more. Of the minuses – not the highest quality of performance of the bait, but even with dropped eyes and shabby sides, the rattlin continues to seduce the predator. Price 250+ rubles.
- Lucky Craft LV500 ., 75 mm, 23 grams. Heavy rattlin for catching trophy pike perch on pits, curbs, deep reaches. It starts up well, trembles and makes noise. Requires powerful tackle, as it is very stubborn. Price 1100+ rubles.
- Spro Vib . 75 mm, 11 grams. Bulky, but not very heavy rattlin. Working depths are 3-4 meters. Intense expressive play. Works on even wiring, step along the curbs, dumps. The price is 350-400 rubles.
- Lucky Craft Varid , the whole range from 12 to 26 grams. Working guides – burrowing uniform at the bottom, jig step, punching. Price 1000+ rubles.
- Yo-Zuri Hardcore Drum . 70 mm, 18 grams. Working depth up to 2 meters. Uniform tracking and wave along the drop-offs with small pauses at the very bottom up to 1-3 seconds. Very high quality holographic colors. The pike perch is stinging. Price 1000+ rubles. Expensive and very high quality collects not only fish, but also driftwood – a cut is needed!
- Jackall TN 70 . 18 grams and 17 grams (silent model). Has a complex balancing system and a rattle (noisy model). The animation is the most diverse, variable from uniform to hard sharp twitch. It is also worth paying attention to the TN TRIGON model with a tungsten lip. The price is 1100 rubles.
- Madness Vibe . 73 mm, 17 grams. Sinking silicone rattlin for trophy predators – pike perch, pike, humpback perch. It looks like a fry both in motion and at rest. Wiring – stop & go, uniform. An original bait worth trying, at least because of the variety. The price is 1300 rubles.
It is also worth noting such models of rattlins, which are generally versatile, including for zander: Usami Daiba, Usami Bigfin, Sprut Ringo.
For pike-perch, it is very important that the rattlin, as it were, rests against the bottom of the reservoir with its nose, imitating a feeding fish, and then falls on its side. All of the above models have this quality.

Winter fishing for pike perch on rattlin
Many of the lures that work on zander during the summer can also be used on ice with success. It is important that the bait works well on the vertical component during the climb and free fall.
Features of catching zander in winter: feeding, posting
There are many animation options, we will list the most universal ones:
- Option one. The bait sinks to the bottom with a characteristic vibration and impact on the ground at the end – this will create a small amount of turbidity, often at this very moment the grip occurs. Then the rod is tossed 40-50 centimeters and the bait falls down on the free line. At the end, a pause is made, during which the bait continues to vibrate. And thus the rattlin rises 1-2 meters from the ground until it finds the horizon in which the pike perch is most active.
- Option two. The lure reaches the bottom and rises from the bottom by 10-20 cm and animates with small-amplitude movements. No sudden movements. This is often the most suitable option for zander.
- Option three. A combination of the previous two. Playing over the bottom of the reservoir, then the first version of the wiring, we lower all the stages of the animation to the bottom and in a circle.
What works in winter: principles of vibration selection, the best working models
The pike perch is almost always at the bottom, where visibility is weak or zero. Therefore, the colors are preferred “chemical” colors and fluorescent colors. The size of the rattlin is selected empirically and the depth at the place of fishing. Silent models are used more often, but “summer” noisy models are also used with success if they have their own game on the fall / rise. The following ratlins have proven themselves well for winter zander:
- Jackall NT60 (Silent) . 60 mm, 12.7 grams. All-season rattlin. Works in free fall when fishing in a plumb line. Price 800+ rubles.
- DUO Bay Ruf SV , 80mm, 15g. Quite a working model for winter underwater fishing. The run-through form, works on the vertical component. Price from 1000 rubles.
- Jackall TN Slim 8 . 80 mm, 12 grams. Equipped with tungsten ball rattles. But this does not stop fishing in the winter. Price 1200+ rubles.
- Yo-zuri 3D Vibe . Working depths up to 5 meters. The price is 800 rubles.
- Yo-Zuri Hardcore VIB 70S . Analogue of Drum (see above summer rattlins for pike perch), only noiseless. The price is around 800 rubles.
We do not recommend using Chinese baits in winter. They practically do not have their own game in the vertical plane, which makes them unsuitable for catching a predator from the ice.
https://youtu.be/UAO5R1-kKQE In winter, passive fish is worth experimenting with changing baits. Collect fish with noisier and larger rattliners, and top up with smaller and quieter ones. For cautious fish, this often gives a good result.
